The trick is to try all the modes (sharpen, focus and stabilize). Sharpen AI works FAR better than “traditional” sharpening methods, but like anything else, it can be overdone. I am using them all a 5 year old mid-range desktop PC, and a one year old mid-range laptop. They do take some time to work (especially Gigapixel), but I don’t find it objectionable. My computer is a 5-year old 15" MacBookPro, 2.8GHz, with 16GB ram, and for processing I use a 27" external monitor. With a 46MP Nikon Z7 capture, my computer took 2 minutes from start to finish when I clicked on Apply. Is it slow? Yes, but I find it tolerable. The newest version of Sharpen AI lets you use the app with a brush instead of a global adjustment, so you can just sharpen certain areas of the photo.
Once in a while I have to go back and run the file again at lower settings. And I find that what I see viewing the image in the Topaz app is not quite the same as what the result looks like in LR or PS. It can be a bit heavy-handed, depending on the image. Most of the time, the Auto setting does a great job. Using the move tool in Photoshop, you need to hit one up arrow and one left arrow (one pixel moves) to realign.I’m getting excellent results from Sharpen AI (as well as DeNoise AI). I usually start with Auto and throttle back, but I've never seen it go this high before. When I moved it back to reasonable the artifacts disappeared. Then I noticed that the Auto setting was ridiculously high (75). The first image I processed had very prominent and ugly artifacts. Could it be that they sometimes throttle new releases so they can offer huge improvements later?īut.

Hard to believe they suddenly discovered how to make it faster in only 5 days. I'm getting real suspicious of Topaz speed improvements. Topaz is so proud of the speed now that they turned on Auto Preview as default. Under AI Sharpen ver 3.2.0 released yesterday I have no crashes (Processing Error) when testing on several images that gave me fits earlier. Didn't have to wait long, only took 5 days.

(I hope one company wasn't just blaming another.)Īs I already had discovered, the May Nvidia driver is the last one that still works well with Topaz and that is the one Topaz support suggested I use since the June and July Nvidia drivers did not fix the problem. Topaz support verified to me that the last two Nvidia drivers have a problem with their programs and that Nvidia is aware of it and said they were working on a solution.
I was getting the processing error with those same programs. I'm not sure if we use the same Nvidia drivers, but here is what I have been told about my Windows 10, RTX 2080ti system:
Fairly robust Nvidia GEForce GTX 1660 GPU. Stats: Desktop unit, 32GB main memory, always 10+ GB available. Strangely, I've turned the GPU option on and off and these problems remain. No such errors on previous Topaz AI versions. Sometimes I have to re-boot the entire system. Usually, I can close Photoshop and relaunch and Topaz AI returns to normal.
Once the slowness sets in, it remains on subsequent images. Sometimes I can simply repeat the update and it will work, but painfully slow. But then on a second attempt I often get the "Processing Error" window when updating. The Photoshop plugins work OK the first time I use them after a fresh system boot and Photoshop launch.

Just FYI - the latest versions of both Topaz Sharpen AI (3.1.2) and Denoise AI (3.2.0) are acting up on my Windows 10 system.
